New Zealand Student Visas
A New Zealand student visa allows approved study subject to the conditions of the visa granted. For many international students paying their own tuition fees, the relevant category is the Fee Paying Student Visa.

Start with the course and education provider
The Fee Paying Student Visa requires an offer of place from an approved education provider, evidence relating to tuition fees and living expenses, and the other immigration requirements. Genuine study intentions, health, character and appropriate insurance also need attention.
Check the exact course name, level, delivery arrangements, start date and duration. Admission to a course and approval of a visa are separate decisions. Do not assume a place at an education provider confirms immigration eligibility.
Plan a realistic study budget
Make a budget that separates tuition, living costs, insurance, travel and the application costs. Identify where the funds will come from and what records explain that funding. Avoid relying on expected part-time earnings as though a job and work permission are guaranteed.
Your preparation should reflect the actual study plan. Explain the connection between the course and your background and keep records of qualifications and previous study. Where there have been changes or gaps, provide an accurate account rather than concealing them.
Work rights and visa conditions
Eligible students may have permission to work part-time and during scheduled holidays, but the conditions of the individual visa control what is permitted. Check your eVisa before working or changing your study arrangements. Existing visa conditions do not necessarily change automatically when a policy announcement is made.
A student visa does not automatically give your partner or children permission to live, work or study in New Zealand. Their options need to be checked separately.
After your qualification
The Post Study Work Visa has its own qualification, study and application-timing requirements. Not every course is eligible. A later resident visa is another separate assessment.
Read about study, work and residence planning before committing to a course solely because it is promoted as a permanent-residence pathway.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an Australian subclass 500 visa?
No. New Zealand has its own student visa categories and requirements. Australian subclass numbers, Genuine Student rules and Australian health-insurance arrangements should not be copied into a New Zealand application.
Can I work while I study?
Only as permitted by your visa conditions. Your course and circumstances influence the work conditions available.
Does completing a course guarantee a work visa or residence?
No. Post-study work and residence are separate categories with separate eligibility requirements.
When should I start preparing?
Allow time for admission, funding evidence, translations and any required checks. Use Immigration New Zealand's current processing guidance rather than relying on an old processing-time promise.
