Plan beyond your next visa

New Zealand Residence Pathways

A residence plan starts with identifying an actual eligibility pathway, not simply choosing a temporary visa and hoping it becomes permanent. Your employment, qualifications, family relationships or investment plans may point to different categories.

Enquire About Residence Options

Through skilled employment

Compare the Skilled Migrant Category, Straight to Residence and Work to Residence. The relevant job and skills requirements differ. Eligible care workers may need to examine the separate care workforce category.

Through family relationships

The Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa and Parent Resident Visa have distinct relationship, supporting-person and other requirements. A family visit does not automatically provide a residence pathway.

Through business or investment

Business and investor categories distinguish acceptable investment from actively operating a business. Immigration eligibility and commercial suitability require separate assessments.

Study, work and settlement planning

Studying in New Zealand may be one stage of a longer plan, but a student visa does not guarantee post-study work or residence. Check the qualification and Post Study Work Visa rules before making a course commitment.

For a job-based plan, understand the employer's role and your own work conditions. See employer-supported residence planning and the AEWV guide. When considering where to live, compare practical employment and family needs without assuming an Australian-style regional nomination pathway exists in New Zealand.

Resident Visa versus Permanent Resident Visa

A resident visa may permit an indefinite stay while its travel conditions remain time-limited. The Permanent Resident Visa is a separate stage with its own requirements. Do not confuse either status with citizenship.

A practical planning checklist

Write down your current position, the category you are examining, the evidence you already hold and the conditions that remain uncertain. Give particular attention to visa expiry, qualification or registration steps, employment changes and family members' separate applications.

Before spending money on a course, relocation or business purchase because of an expected residence outcome, obtain an individual assessment from an appropriately licensed or exempt professional. An online guide is not an approval decision.
