Teacher Migration to New Zealand

Moving to New Zealand as a teacher involves professional recognition, finding an appropriate role and holding the right immigration permission. The teaching sector, age group and your training background all need to be understood.

Registration and practising certification

The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand administers teacher registration and practising certificates. Registration and a current practising certificate are distinct requirements. Overseas-trained applicants should use the Council's pathway and evidence instructions for their circumstances.

Evidence can include teaching qualifications, practicum details, professional standing, teaching experience and the required checks. Where qualification recognition is needed, confirm the appropriate NZQA assessment rather than assuming an overseas qualification has already been accepted for every New Zealand purpose.

Check the actual teaching occupation

For immigration, compare the offered role with the current Green List entry and relevant residence conditions. A teaching qualification does not automatically establish eligibility for every teaching-related occupation or visa.

Possible categories to examine include Straight to Residence, Skilled Migrant Category residence and the Accredited Employer Work Visa, depending on the role and applicant.

Prepare a classroom-focused work history

Record the institutions, age groups, subjects, duties and employment dates that describe your teaching experience. Identify supervised teaching or induction, professional development and any breaks in practice. Request accurate records from the institutions that can verify them.

Keep the provider's qualification decision, the Teaching Council's decision and the employment offer separately. Approval by one organisation should not be presented as approval by the others.

Plan a realistic start date

Discuss the proposed start date, work location and role with the school or education provider. Allow for the time needed to obtain evidence and complete any outstanding registration, certification and immigration steps. Do not rely on a generic processing-time promise when making a relocation commitment.

Does an overseas teaching licence automatically permit teaching in New Zealand?

No. Check the Teaching Council's recognition or registration route and the practising-certificate requirements that apply to you.

Does this page provide job placement?

No. It explains immigration and registration considerations. A visa enquiry is not a guarantee of a teaching position.
