Nurse Migration to New Zealand
For an internationally qualified nurse, a New Zealand move involves separate questions about professional registration, employment and immigration permission. An offer from a health employer does not replace the Nursing Council's requirements or the visa assessment.

Start with Nursing Council registration
The Nursing Council of New Zealand determines registration and scope of practice. You also need the appropriate current practising certificate to practise. The process for an internationally qualified nurse depends on their training, registration history and the applicable Council pathway.
Nurses with current Australian registration may apply through the Trans-Tasman mutual recognition route. This is an application process, not a reason to assume Australian registration automatically authorises practice in New Zealand. Previously registered New Zealand nurses should check the Council's returning-practitioner instructions.
Match the visa to the actual role
Compare the requirements for an Accredited Employer Work Visa with the relevant Green List occupation and residence category. The exact occupation, registration, job offer and employer conditions matter.
A nurse role and a care-support role should not be treated as interchangeable. Selected care occupations have a separate Care Workforce Work to Residence pathway. Whether Straight to Residence or another category is relevant requires checking the actual criteria.
Prepare a professional timeline
Record your nursing qualifications, registration authorities, employment dates and areas of practice. Identify changes in scope, gaps in practice and any conditions on registration. Keep the original documents and explain differences in names or dates.
Ask prospective employers about the actual position, location, supervision and anticipated start date. Keep recruitment promises separate from regulatory or immigration decisions. The Nursing Council does not act as a recruitment agency.
Plan the family's move
Budget for registration steps, any required assessments, visa costs, travel and initial accommodation. Check the work or study permissions needed by each family member rather than assuming your approval covers everyone.
Does registration guarantee a job or visa?
No. Registration, employment and immigration are separate decisions. Each needs its own supporting evidence and approval where required.
What should I include in an initial enquiry?
Provide your nursing qualification, current registration country, recent area of practice, whether you have a New Zealand offer and any approaching visa date. Arrange a suitable channel before sending sensitive records.
