After New Zealand study

Post Study Work Visa

A Post Study Work Visa can give eligible graduates time to work in New Zealand after completing qualifying study. Eligibility, the length of the visa and the work permitted depend on the qualification and study completed.

Check eligibility before choosing a course

New Zealand degree-level qualifications at level 7 or higher and specified non-degree qualifications are treated differently. An eligible non-degree qualification may require work related to the field studied. Not every course advertised to international students leads to post-study work rights.

The visa may be granted for up to three years, depending on the study. Application deadlines differ by circumstances, and this visa is generally available only once. Check your exact deadline rather than assuming every graduate has the same application window.

Keep upcoming changes separate from current rules

Immigration New Zealand has announced an eligibility extension from 16 November 2026 for specified level 7 graduate diploma graduates who also hold a bachelor's degree. That is a future commencement date as at 18 September 2026, not a rule to treat as already available.

Prepare a graduation and visa timeline

Record your course start and completion dates, any changes of qualification, the dates on your student visa and when final results will be available. Ask your provider how to obtain an official completion letter and transcript. These are more useful than a timetable or an expected graduation-ceremony date alone.

Make a separate list of practical arrangements: accommodation, living costs, employment plans and any professional registration needed for the work you intend to do. Keep original documents and explain gaps or changes accurately.

Plan the next stage without assuming residence

Use the work period to understand possible next steps. A later Skilled Migrant Category application or Green List residence application has its own requirements. Neither course completion nor a temporary work visa guarantees a resident visa.

Read your eVisa before working, travelling or changing plans. Where a partner or children will accompany you, check their separate visa options rather than assuming your visa includes them.

Common questions

Does every graduate receive three years?

No. Three years is an upper limit for qualifying circumstances, not an entitlement for every course or applicant.

Is this the Australian subclass 485?

No. New Zealand's Post Study Work Visa is a separate category. Australian graduate-visa age, study and stream rules should not be imported into a New Zealand assessment.

What should I include in an initial enquiry?

State your qualification, provider, study dates, current visa expiry and whether you have previously held a Post Study Work Visa. Do not attach passport, medical or financial documents to an initial enquiry.
