Identify the qualification evidence needed

Engineering New Zealand provides a credential-check service for relevant immigration purposes. Whether that service, another professional assessment or an NZQA assessment is required depends on the applicable occupation and visa rules.

A credential check is not a visa decision. Professional membership, Chartered status and qualification recognition also serve different purposes. Confirm what the receiving organisation actually requires before purchasing an assessment.

Match employment to the visa category

For a qualifying job, examine the Accredited Employer Work Visa. For residence, check the exact engineering occupation on the Green List and compare Straight to Residence, Work to Residence or the Skilled Migrant Category where relevant.

The job, employer, qualification and any occupation-specific pay or registration requirements must fit the category. Do not assume every engineering role qualifies for the same pathway.

Prepare evidence of real engineering work

Organise your degree and transcript, professional records and a chronological employment history. Describe your responsibilities and the type of projects undertaken without disclosing an employer's confidential technical information.

Keep personal contribution distinct from a team's overall project. Where job titles varied between countries or employers, describe the actual work rather than changing historical titles to match an occupation label.

Consider the practical transition

Discuss the proposed position, work location, reporting responsibilities and start date with the employer. Check any sector-specific professional requirements before assuming that a general engineering qualification covers every duty.

Prepare a separate timeline for immigration, professional recognition and relocation. The earliest possible start date is not necessarily the date on which every required approval will be complete.
