Plan study with the next steps in mind

Study, Work & Residence in New Zealand

A course can be an important career decision. It should not be sold or chosen as a guaranteed permanent-residence product. Study permission, post-study work and residence are separate immigration assessments.

Enquire About Study and Future Pathways

First, assess the study plan

Check the provider, qualification level, course content, duration and costs. A student visa application also considers the relevant immigration requirements, including the study purpose and supporting evidence.

Choose a course that makes sense for your abilities and career interests. Ask the provider clear questions about admission, delivery and completion requirements rather than relying on general migration advertising.

Then check post-study work eligibility

The Post Study Work Visa depends on qualifying New Zealand study and other requirements. Not every qualification qualifies, and work conditions can differ by qualification type.

Keep policy commencement dates in view. An announced future extension is not the same as a rule already available for a current application. Record the rule and date on which any course-related immigration assessment is based.

Assess residence independently

A future Skilled Migrant Category, Straight to Residence or Work to Residence application depends on the requirements of that category. A qualification alone does not replace qualifying employment, registration or other conditions where these apply.

Consider what would happen if a suitable job is not available immediately after graduation or if your plans change. A responsible plan needs practical alternatives rather than a single assumed sequence of approvals.

Build a realistic timeline and budget

Separate tuition, living costs, insurance, travel and application costs. Do not build the entire budget around obtaining part-time work. Include time for transcripts, professional registration or qualification assessment where these may be relevant.

Keep course and visa dates together in one calendar. Note which decisions belong to the provider, the registration body and Immigration New Zealand. This helps avoid treating approval at one stage as confirmation of the next.
