Electrical work and immigration

Electrician Migration to New Zealand

An overseas electrical qualification, a job offer and permission to carry out prescribed electrical work are not the same thing. Plan the Electrical Workers Registration Board process alongside the immigration steps for your move.

Check the right registration route

The Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) assesses the appropriate class of registration. The overseas-trained pathway can involve a Limited Certificate, supervised work and specified courses or assessments before the practising-licence stage. The Board's assessment letter sets out the requirements for the individual.

Do not assume that every applicant needs the same hours of supervised work or the same examinations. Where you hold an Australian licence, check the EWRB's separate mutual-recognition route and the scope of work it covers.

Separate licensing from the visa

An Accredited Employer Work Visa depends on qualifying employment and the applicable worker requirements. For residence, check the exact Green List entry or the Skilled Migrant Category rather than treating the word electrician as an automatic approval.

Your proposed duties must fit the work you are authorised to perform. A visa does not remove occupational licensing requirements, and registration is not itself a work visa.

Organise the evidence of your trade

Prepare your qualification and apprenticeship records, employment dates, detailed duties and current licence information. Identify the types of installation, maintenance or testing work you actually performed. Keep original evidence rather than using a generic reference that does not describe your experience.

Ask a prospective employer about the role, supervision, work location and any support with registration requirements. Agree what can realistically happen before and after each approval; avoid assuming you can begin unsupervised work immediately on arrival.

Plan for changes and ongoing obligations

Keep licence, training and visa expiry dates together. Check current EWRB scope and endorsement requirements for the work you intend to undertake, particularly where the role includes specialised work or supervising others.

Can I use an Australian trade assessment as the NZ decision?

No. Check New Zealand's registration and immigration requirements independently. Evidence accepted for one purpose does not automatically satisfy every other authority.

What is useful for an initial enquiry?

State where you trained, your licence or registration status, experience, proposed New Zealand role and any visa deadline. Do not send identity documents through an initial enquiry.
