Prepare for the move
Living & Working in New Zealand
Choosing where to live is both a practical decision and an immigration planning question. Start with a genuine employment or study plan, the visa conditions that apply and the needs of the people moving with you.

Begin with the right work permission
An eligible job may be relevant to the Accredited Employer Work Visa. Some applicants may have another basis for work permission, such as an eligible partnership or post-study category. The conditions of the actual visa determine what work is permitted.
Where employment is tied to a particular employer, role or location, check the approval requirements before making a change. Moving to another town does not by itself create a residence pathway.
Compare locations using your own priorities
Make a practical shortlist based on the real job or course, commuting needs, housing budget, family support and access to the services you expect to use. Compare the total cost of a move, not just a single rental advertisement or salary figure.
Ask useful questions before committing: where will the work take place, how reliable is transport, what are the working hours and how will a partner or children spend their day? Keep a contingency budget for temporary accommodation and changes to the plan.
Check family and professional arrangements
Each family member's immigration position needs attention. Do not assume one person's approval automatically provides work or study rights to everyone else.
For regulated work, check the relevant New Zealand professional body. A visa, a qualification assessment and occupational registration are different decisions. Plan the documents and timing for each rather than assuming one approval covers them all.
Keep residence planning separate
Use New Zealand's actual skilled residence frameworks and Green List requirements. Australian DAMA agreements or regional visa subclasses should not be used as the rules for a New Zealand move.
A useful written plan identifies the immediate visa, the conditions that apply after arrival and any later category being considered. It also records what remains uncertain, so a change in employment or family circumstances can be reassessed.
