Bringing parents to New Zealand
New Zealand Parent Visa Options
The right starting point depends on whether your parents want a temporary visit or are seeking residence. These are different goals with different immigration requirements.
Enquire About Parent Visa Options
Parent Boost Visitor Visa
Parent Boost is a temporary, multiple-entry visitor visa for eligible parents sponsored by their New Zealand citizen or resident child. It can allow visits over a period of up to five years, but it is not a residence pathway.
Applicants must meet the sponsorship, funding, health, insurance and other requirements, and apply from outside New Zealand. A health and insurance check during the third year requires leaving New Zealand. A second visa is a separate application, not an automatic ten-year entitlement.
Parent Resident Visa
The Parent Resident Visa is a separate residence category. It uses an expression-of-interest and invitation process and has its own sponsor eligibility and income requirements. Having an adult child in New Zealand, or holding a visitor visa, does not by itself qualify a parent for residence.
Check the current selection process and the income evidence for the relevant completed tax years. Do not use Parent Boost's financial criteria to assess the Parent Resident Visa.
Plan the family's responsibilities
Before applying, discuss the intended length of stay, living arrangements, medical insurance and how day-to-day costs will be met. Consider what happens if plans change or a parent needs to return home earlier than expected.
Make a separate evidence list for the parent and the proposed sponsor. Record the relationship, each person's immigration status and the documents that explain the financial arrangements. Keep funding sources transparent; do not transfer money simply to create a misleading appearance of ownership.
Compare a shorter visit
Some families may only need a Visitor Visa or another appropriate visitor arrangement. A longer visa should not be chosen solely because its advertised duration is longer. Compare the obligations with the actual purpose of travel.
Health and insurance requirements need attention before significant travel commitments. Read policy coverage and exclusions carefully and check the visa's specific requirements rather than assuming ordinary travel insurance is sufficient.
Common questions
Does Parent Boost lead to permanent residence?
No. Immigration New Zealand describes Parent Boost as a temporary visitor visa, not a pathway to a resident visa. Any residence application needs its own eligibility basis.
Can I use Australia's subclass 870 rules?
No. New Zealand's parent categories have their own sponsorship, financial, health and insurance rules.
What information is useful for an enquiry?
Explain the parent's current country, the child's New Zealand status, the intended length of stay and whether the goal is visiting or residence. Avoid sending medical or financial records until an appropriate channel is arranged.
