Skilled residence in New Zealand

Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is a New Zealand residence pathway for eligible skilled workers. A qualifying job and evidence supporting the relevant pathway are central to the assessment. It is not the Australian points-tested visa system.

Use the rules for your application date.

Immigration New Zealand's published changes have a commencement date of 24 August 2026. They include revised points settings and the Skilled Work Experience and Trades and Technician pathways. Older summaries describing only the previous six-point settings should not be used in isolation.

The three pathway frameworks

Points-based pathway

This framework uses six skilled resident points, based on an eligible skill category and, where needed, qualifying New Zealand work. Occupational registration, qualifications and income are assessed under specific rules; not every credential or period of employment earns points.

Skilled Work Experience pathway

The August 2026 framework recognises a qualifying work history, with a required New Zealand skilled-work component and wage conditions. Occupation restrictions, including the red and amber lists, must be checked before treating a work history as eligible.

Trades and Technician pathway

This is for specified occupations with a relevant qualification and qualifying post-qualification experience. The official rules distinguish relevant experience from skilled work completed in New Zealand. Overseas qualification assessment and the exact occupation listing can be important.

Build an evidence timeline

A useful preparation step is to record each qualification and job in date order. Keep the original award documents, transcripts, registration evidence, employment agreements and independently verifiable employment records. Record changes in duties, hours or pay rather than treating a multi-year job as unchanged throughout.

This makes it easier to identify the questions that need a professional assessment: which pathway applies, which periods may count and whether your documents support the information you intend to provide. A job title or a course advertisement cannot answer those questions alone.

Compare SMC with the Green List

The Straight to Residence Visa and Work to Residence Visa are separate Green List pathways. Being in an occupation with a shortage does not mean every residence category is available.

Residence should also be planned separately from your current temporary visa. Check how you will remain lawfully in New Zealand and what work conditions apply while any application is being considered.

Common questions

Is the SMC an independent visa without a job offer?

No. Do not carry over assumptions from Australia's Skilled Independent visa. The New Zealand SMC requires qualifying employment or a job offer under its rules.

Does meeting a points threshold guarantee approval?

No. Points or pathway requirements are only part of the assessment. The evidence, employment and other residence requirements must also be satisfied.

Can I rely on a previously prepared points calculation?

Review it against the rules applying to your application, especially where it predates the August 2026 changes. Keep a record of the sources and assumptions used.
